NYC Schools Ban AI for Young Students
2 Sep
Summary
- New York City public schools ban AI for students up to eighth grade.
- Concerns over 'cognitive surrender' fuel the AI prohibition.
- Classrooms will keep young students off laptops until third grade.

New York City public schools are implementing a ban on artificial intelligence use for students in grades up to eighth grade, with the policy set to be announced imminently and go into effect next week. This significant shift in technology policy also involves keeping students in the youngest grades, up to third grade, off laptops and tablets.
The decision stems from warnings by teachers and parents regarding the potential negative impacts of AI on children's mental health and cognitive development, specifically the risk of "cognitive surrender." AI use will be permitted in high school, but restricted to learning about the technology itself.
Companion chatbots offering psychological support will also be prohibited. While teachers may use AI for tasks like lesson preparation, they are barred from using it to grade assignments. The city's education department also recommends limiting screen time for middle schoolers to 45 minutes and elementary students to 30 minutes in class.
These new rules follow previous policy adjustments, including a temporary ban on ChatGPT in 2023 that was later reversed. An earlier framework proposed in March had allowed AI for research and creative projects, but faced backlash from parents and teachers who deemed it too permissive. The city's schools chancellor acknowledged that initial communications "missed the mark" and pledged to incorporate feedback into future policies.
