Most 2-K programs are expected to run from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for 260 days annually, a significant expansion from the typical 180 school days. This move addresses the childcare gaps during school breaks and after-school hours that often force parents into costly alternatives or exiting the workforce.
The city is currently notifying existing childcare providers about their selection for the new 2-K seats. While a limited number of spots may follow a traditional schedule, the majority will offer the extended hours. Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels highlighted that the system is being developed to meet the practical needs of families.
