NWT Vet Shortage: Future of Territory at Risk
30 Aug
Summary
- Lack of vets threatens NWT's future growth and pet ownership.
- Rural communities are struggling to compete for veterinary staff.
- NWT needs proactive solutions for veterinary education and staffing.
The N.W.T. is experiencing a significant shortage of veterinary professionals, a situation MLA Kieron Testart warns could jeopardize the territory's future. With Yellowknife anticipating growth in population and new homes, the demand for pet care is set to rise. Dr. Kaitlyn Denroche, owner of Aurora Veterinary Hospital, notes that rural communities are being "left in the dust" as they compete for limited staff.
Dr. Denroche, who sees animals from across the N.W.T. and Nunavut, believes Yellowknife could support many more veterinarians, recalling a time when multiple clinics operated. While the N.W.T. Department of Health has issued many short-term veterinary licenses, these professionals often do not stay. The lack of regulated vet techs, essential for practice, further exacerbates the problem.
To address this, Dr. Denroche suggests nurturing interest among northern students in veterinary medicine. Federal statistics indicate a nationwide challenge, with insufficient new graduates to replace retiring vets and those leaving due to burnout. Across Canada, veterinary colleges are expanding programs to meet demand, yet the N.W.T. Department of Education states no veterinary technician programs are currently planned.
Institutions like Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning and Aurora College have confirmed no plans to introduce such courses. Testart criticizes this lack of institutional agility, emphasizing the need for proactive measures rather than waiting for a crisis. He believes the college could provide local training, preventing students from needing to travel south for education.
