NMC Bars Colleges Under Construction
15 Jul
Summary
- New NMC rules ban colleges with temporary infrastructure.
- MBBS seats have nearly tripled to 1,36,939 seats for 2026-27.
- Applications must show complete infrastructure before permission.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is set to implement stricter regulations for the establishment of new medical colleges. Draft amendments to existing rules mandate that all statutory infrastructure, including teaching hospitals and college buildings, must be fully completed before an institution can apply for permission to start an MBBS program.
Temporary arrangements or partially constructed campuses will no longer be accepted, and applications from colleges still in progress will not be processed. This regulatory overhaul addresses concerns over quality and infrastructure that have arisen alongside a rapid increase in medical seats.
India has seen an almost threefold rise in MBBS capacity over the last decade. For the 2026-27 academic year, the total approved undergraduate medical seats nationwide have reached 1,36,939. This expansion includes 25 newly established colleges adding 2,400 seats and increased intake at existing institutions.
The NMC's approach emphasizes quality assurance by requiring complete campuses and tightening documentation processes. Existing colleges will also need to maintain a dedicated corpus fund. Incomplete applications will face immediate rejection, with no opportunity for rectification.
