NMC Ends PG Diploma Courses for MD/MS Degrees
22 Jun
Summary
- PG diploma medical courses will be phased out by 2027.
- The 2026-27 session is the last for PG diploma admissions.
- New admissions to PG diplomas cease from the 2027-28 academic year.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated the discontinuation of postgraduate diploma medical courses nationwide. The 2026-27 academic session marks the last chance for new enrollments in these diploma programs. Beginning with the 2027-28 academic year, admissions to PG diploma courses will cease entirely.
This strategic move by the NMC is designed to standardize postgraduate medical training, elevate the quality of specialist education, and ensure alignment with current educational benchmarks. The commission believes this transition will enable medical institutions to optimize their infrastructure and faculty.
Many medical colleges already possess the necessary resources to convert existing diploma seats into MD or MS degree programs. Colleges offering PG diplomas can apply to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) to transform these into corresponding degree courses. Detailed guidelines and timelines for this conversion process will be released shortly by the NMC.
