26 Feb
Summary
- NITK Surathkal now has a one million litre/day water disinfection plant.
- The plant uses filtration, chlorination, and ozonation to purify water.
- PETRONET MHB Ltd funded the project through its CSR initiative.

The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) at Surathkal, Mangaluru, has inaugurated a significant water disinfection plant. This new facility boasts an installed capacity of one million litres per day, designed to treat raw water sourced from on-campus tube wells and open wells.
The treatment process involves two stages of filtration, followed by chlorination and ozonation. This multi-step purification effectively removes excess iron and various waterborne contaminants, ensuring a safe and reliable water supply. The project was made possible through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by PETRONET MHB Ltd, a subsidiary of ONGC and HPCL.
This development is set to augment the water supply from the Mangaluru City Corporation, especially during summer months. B Ravi, Director of NITK Surathkal, highlighted that the plant will utilize water from this new facility, along with their existing 30 million-litre rainwater harvesting reservoir. This strategic enhancement supports NITK's vision for a smart and sustainable campus, benefiting thousands of residents.
Sudhir Kumar, Managing Director of PETRONET MHB Ltd and an NITK alumnus, emphasized the company's commitment to societal well-being through CSR. The initiative is expected to make a lasting impact on the campus community, ensuring greater water security for students, staff, and faculty.
