The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a new 20-hour activity-based module on computational thinking and artificial intelligence for students in Classes 9 through 12. This foundational learning resource was developed by faculty from IIT Madras and IIT Jodhpur.
The module is designed for students with no prior AI knowledge, aiming to foster careful, confident, and responsible users of AI systems. It aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, reinforcing that human judgment and ethical responsibility are paramount.
Organized into five units, the module covers AI in everyday life, machine learning, AI errors, data privacy, and modern AI tools. It prioritizes practical exercises, discussions, and reflection over memorizing technical terms. Students are encouraged to maintain a "Curious Notebook" to record their observations and reasoning.
Key topics include recognizing AI in daily applications, understanding how machines learn from data, identifying AI limitations and misinformation, data privacy under India's DPDP Act, and using AI tools as helpers rather than replacements for independent thought. The module emphasizes a "helper-stance" approach.
This initiative complements CBSE's earlier launch of a CT and AI curriculum for younger students (Classes 3-8), ensuring a progressive integration of these crucial concepts into India's education system from an early age.
