Summary
- Program combines tutoring, enrichment, and outdoor experiences.
- Aims to combat academic loss during summer break.
- Offers personalized small-group tutoring for students.

The Mitchell School District launched its Summer Scholars program on June 1, 2026, with the goal of preventing the "summer slide" in elementary students. This initiative combines academic tutoring in reading and math with enrichment activities, outdoor experiences, and community field trips. The program, which runs through August 14, 2026, offers students small-group tutoring sessions with a three-to-one student-teacher ratio, allowing for personalized attention.
Coordinators report that the program has found its rhythm by its third week, with students becoming adjusted to the routines. The primary objective is to maintain and improve academic skills, particularly in reading and mathematics, to ensure students return to school better prepared. Beyond academics, the program emphasizes social interaction, with students from different elementary schools mingling and forming new friendships.
Community engagement is a significant component, featuring field trips to places like Mitchell Technical College and Camp Arroya. These excursions provide new knowledge and enhance social skills, contributing to background knowledge that supports reading and overall academic success. The program, funded by the Musick Family Foundation and participation fees, currently serves 85 students per session, with positive feedback from parents and students alike.
