Midwives Host Mock Maternity Ward for Students
23 Mar
Summary
- Simulated labor and C-section scenarios offered to students.
- Workshop provides insight into midwife's daily tasks.
- Event was massively oversubscribed, with more planned.

Sixth form pupils are gaining insight into maternity ward work through lifelike simulations of labor, caesarean sections, and newborn care scenarios. Hull Royal Infirmary is hosting this event on April 2, providing Year 12 learners from East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire with a unique opportunity to experience a day in the life of a midwife.
The simulated "hands-on" workshop, organized by NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, will demonstrate core clinical midwifery skills. These include delivering newborns, performing a caesarean section in theatre, and assisting with breastfeeding and postnatal recovery. This approach allows students to gain valuable experience without needing to enter active clinical areas.
Jayne Dobson, employability coordinator at Hull City Council, highlighted the event's importance in providing crucial experience that current work programs cannot offer. The workshop, which had only 12 places available, was massively oversubscribed and snapped up within days. Consequently, the NHS is planning another similar event later in the year due to the high demand.
