Summary
- On-site dental care pilot offers free services at Miami-Dade schools.
- Program allows students to receive treatment during school hours.
- Initiative aims to reduce missed work for parents and class time for students.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools has launched a new pilot program called Big Smiles Dental, offering free on-site dental services to students at 40 select schools. The initiative aims to provide essential dental care, including exams and cleanings, directly on school campuses. This allows students to receive treatment without missing instructional time and helps parents avoid taking time off work.
The mobile dental clinics are set up temporarily at each participating school. A licensed dentist and dental assistant provide services using portable equipment. After completing care at one school, the team moves to the next campus. The program aims to improve children's overall quality of life and reduce the significant number of school hours lost annually due to dental issues.
This program is being introduced as the school district plans for a new superintendent, with current Superintendent Jose L. Dotres' contract ending in February 2027. The initiative highlights the district's commitment to supporting students' well-being beyond academics, addressing health needs that can impact learning. Untreated dental problems are a leading cause of chronic health issues in childhood and can significantly hinder a child's ability to focus and thrive in school.
