Maithili Language Set for CTET Inclusion

The Maithili language is anticipated to become an optional language for the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), a move that fulfills a long-standing aspiration in Maithili-speaking regions, particularly Mithilanchal. Local media reports suggest a proposal has advanced through the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), indicating a significant step towards its formal inclusion. BJP MP Dr Gopal Ji Thakur shared that the process is advancing, which could allow candidates to take the examination in their mother tongue.

This potential inclusion is expected to enhance the CTET experience for Maithili speakers nationwide. Currently, CTET is offered in 20 languages, but Maithili is not among them. Candidates select two languages for the exam, and taking it in Maithili could improve comprehension and test performance, especially for those from rural backgrounds primarily educated in the language. This is seen as a move towards greater accessibility and fairness in the national teacher eligibility examination.

The Central Teacher Eligibility Test, administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), is crucial for individuals seeking to teach in Classes I to VIII in government schools. While regulators have reportedly made progress, official confirmation from CBSE and subsequent notification in CTET information bulletins will be necessary before Maithili is officially added. This expansion would represent an important step for linguistic representation in national examinations.
