Maharashtra Medical Colleges Face Unprecedented Vacant Seats

Maharashtra's medical and dental admissions for the 2026-27 academic year have concluded with a notable number of vacant seats, totaling 138 across MBBS and BDS courses. The majority of these unfilled positions, specifically 84 MBBS and 54 BDS seats, are concentrated within private medical colleges and universities. This situation marks a significant departure from previous years, where such vacancies were minimal or nonexistent.

The current academic year saw 8,814 MBBS and 2,617 BDS seats available. While government medical colleges reported full occupancy, private institutions experienced vacancies: 39 MBBS seats and 22 BDS seats remained empty. A private university also reported 30 vacant BDS seats. This contrasts sharply with the 2023-2026 period, which saw no vacant MBBS seats and very few BDS vacancies.

Sources indicate that stricter oversight of the admission process, including the state government's decision to abolish the institutional round for undergraduate admissions in private colleges, has contributed to the vacancies. All seat allotments are now managed by the State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, eliminating avenues for backdoor entries and irregularities. This centralized process, involving three regular and three stray rounds, has enhanced transparency.

However, the high cost of medical education is also cited as a factor. Parents' representatives noted that increasing fees and uncertainty regarding scholarship benefits make families hesitant to commit significant savings to medical studies, emphasizing a need for more affordable education options.
