The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme has been successfully rolled out across Madurai district, extending its reach to students in Classes 6 through 8. This expansion, launched statewide by chief minister C Joseph Vijay via videoconference, marks a significant step in ensuring nutritional support for more students.
Local events celebrating the rollout were held at government schools, attended by officials including the higher education minister and the district collector. They highlighted the scheme's importance in removing hunger as an obstacle to education. The initiative will now serve 69,730 middle school students in 574 schools throughout Madurai district, with 52,605 students in 251 schools within the Madurai Corporation limits directly benefiting from the program.
The initial menu offered to students featured a traditional and nutritious spread, including ven pongal, vegetable sambar, and sweet pongal. Officials emphasized that providing free and nutritious breakfast is crucial for children's well-being and academic success.
