Summary
- Around 400 students are completing free summer swim lessons.
- Student instructors teach water safety and survival skills.
- Lessons aim to build confidence and prevent drowning incidents.

Madera Unified is offering free swim lessons this summer, with approximately 400 students expected to complete the program. Held at Matilda Torres High School's pool, the lessons cater to students from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade.
Young children are learning essential water safety skills, from blowing bubbles to independent swimming. The program's goal, according to coordinator Katie Enos, is to familiarize students with water, teach survival techniques, and build confidence, thereby reducing the fear of drowning.
Fellow Madera Unified students serve as paid instructors, gaining valuable experience through the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program. These instructors guide students through 10-day sessions, each lasting 30 minutes, across four skill levels. Johanna Cuevas, a student instructor, described the experience as rewarding, highlighting the significant progression in students' water comfort and abilities.
The program emphasizes drowning prevention, a critical concern during summer water recreation. Enos stressed the importance of understanding water safety and the silent nature of drowning. Ultimately, the initiative aims to ensure students stay cool in the Valley heat while acquiring vital life-saving skills.
