- Donations were unrestricted, empowering institutions' financial decisions.

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has significantly boosted education funding, donating around $7 billion in 2025. This brings her total recent contributions to over $26 billion. Sixteen California public education institutions received a combined $461 million between 2021 and 2025 through her organization, Yield Giving. These donations were notably unrestricted, allowing recipients to allocate funds as they deemed most effective.
California State University, Northridge (CSUN) received the largest share, totaling $103 million across two donations in 2021 and 2025. This funding proved crucial for CSUN, which was facing a significant budget deficit and serves a large population of first-generation and underrepresented students.
Other institutions also benefited substantially. The University of California, Merced received $58 million, directed towards student success, research, and capital projects. California State University, East Bay was granted $50 million to enhance student outcomes and establish an endowment. Scott's approach prioritizes "mission-aligned ventures" and undercapitalized groups, trusting organizations to manage funds for maximum impact.
While Scott's giving primarily targeted higher education, some funds also reached community colleges and K-12 districts, such as Fresno Unified School District's $20 million in 2022. However, a past incident involving misuse of funds at Santa Barbara City College highlights the scrutiny some unrestricted gifts have faced.
