Race discrimination rife at LSTM, report reveals
26 Jul
Summary
- Report finds racial discrimination and Eurocentric approach at LSTM.
- Staff of color report issues dismissed by line managers.
- Lack of trust and fear prevent many staff from speaking out.

An independent report has revealed significant issues of racial discrimination and a predominantly Eurocentric approach at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). Commissioned after an open letter from the BAME staff network, the report highlights that staff of color have experienced racially discriminatory behavior, which was frequently dismissed by their line managers. Many respondents felt ostracized by current promotion and progression systems.
The investigation also noted a lack of trust and potential fear among staff of color, leading to reluctance in fully participating in the review process. This suggests a deep-seated issue with reporting and managing racism within the institution. The report recommends diversifying academic staff to enhance student learning experiences, which have sometimes been viewed as a 'colonial exchange'.
In response, LSTM director Prof David Lalloo stated the institution accepts the findings and is committed to addressing the recommendations, aiming to become an actively anti-racist organization. However, some staff members express skepticism, noting that decades of pain have been experienced, and question the leadership's sudden responsiveness.
