Loughborough High School is celebrating a century of its unique 'tableaux' carol service, a tradition believed to be unique in England. This special performance involves Year 13 students embodying characters from old master paintings, set to choral music, hymns, and readings, recreating the nativity story.
This year's centenary celebration also aligns with the school's 175th anniversary. A new scene, inspired by the historical Wilton Diptych, was commissioned specifically for this year, accompanied by newly composed music. Alumnae from 1965 to 2020, some of whom are current staff, participated in this special addition.
The intricate sets for the tableaux have been hand-painted, with some props dating back to the 1950s. Students work diligently between scenes to move the scenery quietly. A new motto, "100 years of standing still," has been created for the centenary, reflecting the essence of this cherished and enduring school tradition.
