Author: Masterpieces Bore Kids, Thrillers Inspire Reading

Bestselling author Lee Child argues that the exclusive focus on 'masterpieces' in UK schools is alienating children from reading. He suggests that thrillers and other compelling genres should be integrated into school curricula and libraries to encourage a reading habit.

Child has been actively participating in literacy sessions with inmates at HMP Doncaster, a program he hopes will expand nationally. These sessions focus on encouraging prisoners to write about their own experiences, aiming to improve their skills and confidence. Participants have reported a calmer and more positive atmosphere during these activities.

The initiative, developed with MP Paul Davies, is presented as a practical approach to enhancing community safety by reducing reoffending rates. Justice Minister Jake Richards acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the importance of providing individuals with the skills and confidence to reintegrate into society successfully after their release.
