King George's Medical University (KGMU) Vice Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand has been granted a second consecutive term, a historic first for the institution. This reappointment comes as KGMU enters a significant expansion phase.
Prof Nityanand expressed enthusiasm for her renewed tenure, emphasizing a focus on completing ongoing projects and enhancing patient care, academics, and research. A key initiative will be the digitization of all patient records through collaboration with the University of Manitoba, Canada.
During her initial term, which began on August 10, 2023, KGMU achieved NAAC A++ accreditation and saw the expansion of robotic surgery. The university's global and national rankings improved significantly, moving from 18th to 8th in the NIRF rankings. Transplant programs also advanced, and pharmacy services were expanded.
The university has also navigated administrative challenges, including inquiries into alleged financial irregularities in the urology department and sexual harassment complaints. The administration has responded with inquiries, suspensions, and referrals to government agencies.
Looking ahead, KGMU plans to focus on international rankings and further strengthen its academic and healthcare offerings while reinforcing governance and transparency.
