Kerala Schools Ordered to Implement Strict Snakebite Safety Measures
11 Nov
Summary
- Schools must conduct safety audits and maintain emergency readiness
- Staff training on first aid for snakebites and access to anti-venom required
- Regular mock drills for emergencies like snakebites, fires, and floods

In response to concerns over student safety, the Kerala government has issued a set of comprehensive guidelines for all schools in the state. The new directives, which come into effect immediately, make it mandatory for schools to undertake detailed safety audits and maintain full emergency readiness.
Under the new rules, schools must carry out thorough inspections of their infrastructure, including classrooms, playgrounds, and boundary walls, to identify and address any potential hazards that could attract snakes or pose health risks to students. Each school is also required to have a well-equipped first-aid room and ensure that at least two staff members are trained in first aid, CPR, and emergency wound care.
To enhance emergency preparedness, schools must coordinate with local hospitals and health centers to ensure the availability of anti-snake venom (ASV) and paediatric medical care. They are also instructed to conduct regular mock drills in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority to test their readiness for incidents such as snakebites, fires, floods, or earthquakes.
The guidelines emphasize the importance of maintaining snake-proof surroundings, educating students on snake safety, and engaging authorized snake handlers through the Forest Department. Schools are directed to incorporate snakebite prevention and safety modules into their curriculum and organize periodic awareness sessions for students and staff.
The Kerala government has taken these proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of students and ensure that schools are equipped to handle snakebite emergencies effectively. The new directives aim to minimize the risk of such incidents and provide a comprehensive framework for schools to enhance their safety and emergency preparedness.
