Kent SEND Advisors Strike Over Role Changes
25 Feb
Summary
- Special education advisors in Kent are striking over changes to their roles.
- Staff report a lack of communication and support since the council took over.
- The strike is over transparency and respect, not pay increases.

Special educational needs (SEND) advisors in Kent have begun strike action in protest against significant changes to their roles. Specialist Teaching and Learning Services (STLS) staff, formerly employed by special schools and commissioned by the local authority, became direct employees of Kent County Council (KCC) in September. Staff report that their jobs changed immediately, with restrictions preventing them from contacting or visiting mainstream schools for an initial period. This has led to feelings of abandonment and a loss of vital support for parents and nurseries. The advisors are striking for greater transparency, respect, and the ability to perform their duties effectively, emphasizing that pay is not the issue. KCC stated that staff transfers and practice alignments were conducted lawfully and transparently, and that a full consultation took place. The council aims to reform support delivery for better outcomes for children and families. Further strike dates are scheduled for March.
