20 Jul
Summary
- Primary pupils launched a cycle safety program.
- Discounted helmets were made available through partnerships.
- Children presented ideas to local officials.

A proactive group of primary school students in Jersey has launched an impactful cycle safety initiative. The school council at Rouge Bouillon, comprising children aged four to 11, identified a need to increase helmet usage among their peers. Through collaboration with local businesses, they successfully provided 86 subsidized helmets, making them more accessible to families concerned about cost.
This program addresses Jersey law, which mandates helmet use for cyclists under 14. The children's dedication was acknowledged by St. Helier Constable Inna Gardiner, who invited them to the town hall to commend their research and action. Their recommendations were also heard by the Minister for Education, with plans to discuss future implementation.
The initiative received support from Headway Jersey, a brain injury charity. Ambassador Alison Marshall highlighted the potential for culture change, comparing increased helmet use to the widespread adoption of seat belts. The children's efforts aim to embed a safety-conscious mindset in the younger generation, promoting brain protection akin to how people protect their phones.
