Japan's LOTUS Programme 2026 is now accepting applications from 1,000 Indian Master's/PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. This initiative by the Government of Japan is designed to enhance joint research collaborations and support the career progression of talented young scientists.
The program is structured into two tiers: LOTUS Basic and LOTUS Aspire. The LOTUS Basic program provides monthly living expenses of Rs 1,40,000 and additional support for joint supervision. The LOTUS Aspire program offers enhanced funding, with monthly living expenses of Rs 1,40,000 and yearly joint supervision support that can total up to Rs 25.6 lakh annually.
To apply, candidates must have their application submitted by a Principal Investigator at a Japanese university or research institution; direct applications are not permitted. The deadline for submissions is June 9, 2026, with final selections announced in late August 2026. The maximum age for applicants is 40 years, and support is set to begin in October 2026.
