Jain School Defends Rs 50 'Food Fee' for Methi
24 Sep
Summary
- School claims Rs 50 fee was for canteen food, not a penalty.
- Institution cites Jain religious minority status and food policy.
- Minority Commission seeks report from police on the incident.
A Jain religious minority institution, Tapovan Vidyalaya in Bhayandar, has responded to a show-cause notice regarding a Rs 50 charge imposed on a student. The school asserts this charge was for an alternative food item provided from its canteen, not a penalty for bringing fenugreek (methi) in his lunchbox, as alleged by a complainant.
The school explained that its food discipline is based on Jain educational and institutional values. If a student brings food contrary to their policy, an alternative is provided, and its cost is applied. The institution maintains that this practice does not contravene the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
Meanwhile, the Minority Commission has requested a report from the Navghar police station. The police have reportedly recorded statements from the school's management concerning the incident.
