Indian Hills Launches Hybrid EMT Paramedic Program

Indian Hills Community College is introducing a comprehensive year-long hybrid EMT academy, designed to combat a persistent shortage of emergency medical personnel. The program, starting September 16 and concluding May 19, will run each Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The academy features two distinct 16-week sessions. The initial phase involves hybrid coursework, blending online materials with interactive live classes to ensure student engagement. This is followed by a second 16-week period dedicated to crucial clinical hands-on experience at local agencies, such as hospitals or fire departments.

This new curriculum expands upon a successful four-county summer internship program. Open to individuals aged 17 and older, the academy accommodates high school students and those already in the workforce. Upon successful completion of both sessions and passing the national registry exam, students will be eligible for EMT certification in Iowa.

Graduates of the EMT program can immediately seek employment in the state. Furthermore, they have the option to enroll in the paramedic program starting the following February, completing it by November of that year. The academy's cost is $2,400, with financial assistance available through the GAP Tuition Assistance Program.
