IIT Roorkee Trains Engineers in Water Reuse
27 Jul
Summary
- 22 students trained in wastewater treatment and reuse techniques.
- Training focused on safe water reuse for irrigation and industry.
- Program highlighted India's critical need for water recycling solutions.

Twenty-two final-year diploma engineering students from government polytechnics across Uttarakhand participated in a two-day training program at IIT Roorkee. The initiative, organized by IIT Roorkee's Civil Engineering Department under NTPC's CSR, focused on sustainable wastewater treatment and reuse. Students learned practical applications for treated wastewater, including irrigation, industrial uses, and toilet flushing, thereby reducing reliance on freshwater resources.
During the training, participants toured IIT Roorkee's sewage treatment plant and conducted water quality analyses. They explored technologies like ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis for producing reclaimed water. This program aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world engineering challenges, promoting a circular water economy.
The training comes amid India's escalating water crisis, with reports indicating that a vast majority of urban wastewater is not treated. Experts emphasize that expanding wastewater recycling is crucial for alleviating pressure on the nation's freshwater supplies. The initiative seeks to equip future engineers with innovative solutions for water and environmental challenges.
