The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has taken a significant step in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship by launching its School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The new school, inaugurated last month, aims to mentor and support the next generation of deep tech startup founders through structured curricular and academic programs.
The school will offer a minor stream in entrepreneurship, an MS (Entrepreneurship) degree, and a PhD program. It will also establish initiatives to contribute to translational research and have an 'Entrepreneur-in-Residence' (EIR) cohort to support returning professionals who want to pursue entrepreneurship.
IIT Madras, which has already achieved remarkable success in the startup ecosystem, is now looking to institutionalize its innovation and entrepreneurship efforts. The institute is home to India's largest deep-tech startup ecosystem, with over 475 startups valued at more than ₹50,000 crore. These startups have collectively created over 11,000 jobs, filed more than 700 patents, and attracted ₹12,000 crore in investments.
The launch of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship is a testament to IIT Madras' commitment to nurturing the next generation of transformative ventures. By providing structured support and resources, the institute aims to empower deep tech entrepreneurs and drive India's innovation landscape forward.
