- This is the ninth suicide at IIT Kanpur in two years.

A 25-year-old PhD scholar from the Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Kanpur tragically died by suicide on Tuesday afternoon. Sources confirm the scholar, Ramswaroop Ishwaram, jumped from the sixth floor of a residential building on campus.
Initial police inquiries indicate Ishwaram had been undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression for the past two years. Friends reported his mental state had been deteriorating recently, despite ongoing support from the institute's facilities. His last appointment with a counselor was scheduled for Tuesday evening.
This incident follows a similar tragedy on December 29, when another student was found dead. The repeated suicides at IIT Kanpur, with nine recorded in the last two years making up 30% of all IIT suicides, have intensified scrutiny on the institution's mental health infrastructure and prompted calls for accountability.
