Summary
- IIT Kanpur researchers are investigating hostel room environment's effect on sleep.
- Nearly 70% of surveyed students reported poor sleep quality.
- The study aims to influence future building designs for better sleep.

Researchers at IIT Kanpur are exploring the critical link between hostel room environments and student sleep quality. This pioneering study, led by Professor Anubha Goel, examines factors like ventilation, temperature, and humidity, moving beyond traditional medical or psychological approaches.
An initial survey of over 500 students indicated that nearly 70% experienced poor sleep. Environmental factors such as high temperatures, humidity, and inadequate ventilation were identified as significant contributors. This pilot research was published in 'Building and Environment' in November 2025.
