Healthcare Students Get Upfront Placement Cash
1 Sep
Summary
- Students will receive advance cash for travel and accommodation costs.
- This change eliminates upfront payment and reimbursement delays.
- New policy aims to ease financial pressure and improve access to placements.

Beginning in the 2026/27 academic year, healthcare students in the UK will receive upfront cash support for clinical placement travel and accommodation. This change from the Department of Health and Social Care means eligible students will no longer have to pay for these expenses before being reimbursed.
The advance funding aims to alleviate financial strain on students, who currently cover costs themselves and wait for claims to be processed. Health Minister Alison McGovern stated that no student should be prevented from gaining necessary experience due to upfront costs. This initiative is part of a broader 10-Year Health Plan to support students and build the NHS workforce.
Professional bodies, including the Royal College of Midwives and the British Dietetic Association, have welcomed the move. They highlight its potential benefits for students from less advantaged backgrounds and those facing higher travel expenses for rural placements. However, some also call for further support regarding graduate debt and job security for newly qualified professionals.
