Haryana Tackles Student Mental Health Crisis
14 Jan
Summary
- Training module to address rising student mental health issues.
- Principals from 30 colleges to attend initial workshop.
- Supreme Court directive spurs statewide mental health training.

Higher education authorities in Haryana are initiating a comprehensive program to address critical mental health challenges faced by college students. The initiative, driven by a March 2025 Supreme Court order, aims to establish a robust framework for mental health support on campuses across the state. This includes developing a draft training module and a plan for creating master trainers.
The program's initial phase will involve principals from 30 colleges in Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, and Jhajjar attending a workshop. This workshop will cover essential topics such as understanding student mental health issues, the role of educators, fostering psychological safety, and crisis identification. The overarching objective is to build a more supportive and aware campus community.
Officials anticipate this workshop will pave the way for a phased statewide rollout of mental health training for both teaching and non-teaching staff. The initiative is a direct response to concerns about increasing rates of depression, degree incompletion, and student suicides, seeking to create a proactive approach to campus wellbeing.
