Summary
- Students explored Gullah Geechee culture through food and history.
- A chef prepared a traditional meal for the visiting students.
- Education on Gullah Geechee heritage is growing in South Carolina.

Students from Charleston County School of the Arts recently experienced a unique English course focused on memoir, culminating in a visit to the Avery Research Center. Their six-week exploration centered on the Gullah Geechee people, descendants of West Africans, viewed through the lens of their distinct food culture. This educational journey included studying ingredients like okra and red rice, and examining historical cookbooks and local food festival materials.
During their visit, seniors engaged with archives, with some discovering personal family connections. A Gullah Geechee chef, Reggie Miller, prepared a meal featuring Carolina gold rice and local produce. The students then created a zine documenting Gullah Geechee foodways, highlighting how family recipes preserve history. This course, funded by a grant, aims to deepen understanding of the historical value of these culinary traditions.
Across South Carolina, high school and college students are increasingly learning about Gullah Geechee history and culture, with a notable focus on foodways. Coastal Carolina University students, supported by a Mellon Foundation grant, produced multimedia projects on Gullah food, examining the cultural significance of items like rice and collard greens. This educational shift acknowledges the deep roots and resilience of Gullah Geechee heritage.
Educators are expanding the scope of Gullah Geechee studies beyond English and social studies, incorporating environmental science to address contemporary challenges. Discussions now include food availability in the context of climate change and displacement, and how traditional recipes can be adapted amidst rising costs and resource scarcity. Efforts are also underway to support Gullah makers by enhancing their online presence and product packaging.
