2 Nov
Summary
- Schools must form wellness teams with counselors and student peer leaders.
- Mandatory appointment of qualified counselors for schools with 100+ students.
- Students banned from being segregated or humiliated based on exam results.
Gujarat has introduced new regulations to bolster mental health support in secondary and higher secondary schools, aiming to alleviate student stress and prevent suicides. These measures, applicable to Classes 9-12, mandate the formation of School Wellness Teams (SWTs) comprising principals, counselors, teachers, and student peer leaders, known as 'Mano-Mitra'.
Schools with 100 or more students must appoint at least one qualified counselor or psychologist. Smaller schools will establish referral arrangements with external mental health services. The regulations also prohibit the segregation and public humiliation of students based on academic results, emphasizing equality and encouragement.
Furthermore, schools are required to organize activities like yoga, meditation, and sports to foster student well-being. Confidential channels for students to share concerns will be established, alongside regular training for all staff on mental health first aid and emergency response. A district-level committee will oversee the implementation of these crucial new guidelines.
