Gujarat HC Fights for Medical Seat Vacancies
20 Dec
Summary
- Gujarat High Court ordered authorities to justify denying further MBBS admissions.
- Medical Counselling Committee will conduct additional rounds for vacant seats.
- Petitioners withdrew plea after MCC confirmed more admission rounds were planned.

The Gujarat High Court recently addressed a petition concerning numerous vacant MBBS seats. The MEDGUJ Association argued that authorities were reluctant to conduct further admission rounds, contrary to previous years and the interests of aspiring students. The court, on December 15, orally directed respondents to provide a justifiable reason for not holding an additional admission round, noting that around 57 MBBS seats were likely to remain unfilled.
The situation evolved when the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) notified the court of its plan to organize further admission rounds, possibly a fourth and fifth, to fill all vacant MBBS seats. This development led the petitioners to withdraw their plea. The court granted them the liberty to file a fresh petition should any future issues arise regarding these admissions.
The Association had pointed out that MCC and the National Medical Commission had resolved to conduct an additional round for BDS courses on December 14, suggesting a similar approach could be adopted for MBBS. The High Court's intervention aimed to ensure that all vacant medical seats were considered for admission, reflecting a commitment to maximizing educational opportunities for students.
