28 Aug
Summary
- Pilot offers free bus and tram travel to young Sheffield residents.
- Scheme aims to boost access to education, work, and leisure.
- Free travel pilot will run from February 15, 2027 to September 5, 2027.

A pilot scheme providing free bus and tram travel for Sheffield residents aged 5-18 is set to be presented to councillors. Developed by Sheffield City Council in partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, the initiative aims to enhance access to education, training, work, and leisure activities for young people.
The pilot is scheduled to run from February 15, 2027, coinciding with the February half-term, until September 5, 2027. Eligible youngsters will utilize a dedicated smartcard travel pass, similar to existing schemes in Barnsley. This program is anticipated to address transport cost barriers that hinder young people's opportunities and promote independence, especially for those with special educational needs and disabilities.
Plans for this Freedom to Travel initiative will be reviewed by Sheffield City Council's Strategy and Resources Policy Committee on September 2. Those already holding specific travel passes will automatically receive a new one, while others can apply online.
