University Halts Geography Courses in Cornwall

The University of Exeter is set to cease all undergraduate geography programs at its Cornwall campus next month, a decision drawing sharp criticism from the University College Union (UCU). UCU General Secretary Jo Grady described the move as "beggaring belief," stating that members will vote for strike action to safeguard educational provisions. This announcement follows proposals to reduce 150 full-time roles across the university and comes as students receive their A-level results, potentially impacting recruitment.

While geography programs will continue at Exeter's Streatham Campus, the UCU argues the timing of the Cornwall closure is strategically damaging. A spokesperson for the University of Exeter acknowledged the decision is "disappointing" for applicants and staff, emphasizing efforts to provide support and alternative options, including programs at the Penryn and Streatham campuses. The university assures current students will complete their studies and reiterates commitment to the Penryn campus, with ongoing communication and support for affected staff.
