Summary
- A school has secured permanent use of a former shop.
- The building will serve as extra teaching and study space.
- The change of use was approved by local planning officers.
Ewell Castle School has received approval to indefinitely use a former high street shop for its educational needs. The school, located in Ewell, Surrey, had previously been granted a temporary five-year permission in 2021 to utilize the space as extra teaching and study areas for its sixth form students.
The Epsom & Ewell Borough Council's planning officers approved the permanent change of use, noting that the past five years had sufficiently demonstrated the location's suitability. They highlighted that the school's proposal brought a vacant property back into use and improved the area's social infrastructure.
The school's existing campus on Church Street is described as very compact, necessitating additional accommodation for students and support staff. The approved plans also include the continued use of 13 private parking spaces. A school spokesperson confirmed no physical changes would be made to the building, and no complaints were received during the temporary usage period.
