As university admission season arrives, the University of Roehampton is introducing esports scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This initiative acknowledges the burgeoning popularity of competitive video gaming, known as esports, by supporting students who demonstrate proficiency in both academics and gaming.

Scholars are expected to participate in university tournaments and represent Roehampton at events. While minimum rankings in major games are preferred, the university also considers applicants with strong streaming presence on platforms like Twitch. This program aims to alleviate financial burdens, with former scholar Cameron Dray noting the crucial support of a £2,000 scholarship in an expensive city.

Student money expert Tom Allingham highlights that significant scholarship and bursary funds often go unclaimed due to a lack of awareness. Initiatives like Roehampton's esports scholarship can help reduce the average graduate debt of over £47,500 in England and provide essential financial support, allowing students to focus on their studies and gaming achievements.
