Emergency Services Spark Future Careers

A "ground-breaking" work experience project has dramatically scaled up, now reaching 200 pupils compared to 30 last year. Organized by Bedford Giving, the "Taste of the Workplace" events saw emergency service professionals visit Wixams Academy.

Students participated in realistic re-enactments, including a car and e-scooter crash scenario, allowing them to witness the collaborative efforts of various healthcare professionals and emergency responders. This immersive approach has been instrumental in shaping students' career aspirations.

Pupils aged 13 to 14 were introduced to approximately 20 different roles across blue light services and related professions. The project aims to expose young people to potential careers and strengthen community connections with vital safety services.

Organizers highlighted that students who engage with multiple employers during their education are significantly less likely to become NEET (not in education, employment, or training). The program has inspired many students to consider careers in uniformed services.

Future sessions are scheduled to take place at Daubeney Academy in Bedford during June and July.
