Dolly Parton's Book Program Faces Funding Crisis

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a program that has distributed over 300 million free books to children, is experiencing funding difficulties. The initiative, founded in 1995 in Sevier County, Tennessee, aims to foster early literacy by mailing a book each month to children from birth to age five. Its reach has expanded to all 50 U.S. states, Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and four other countries.

A 2025 study by United Way indicated that children in the program were four times more likely to develop strong emerging reading skills. However, the program's reliance on state grants makes it vulnerable to budget cuts, impacting its operations in various states. For example, Indiana eliminated state funding last year, while Maine lost its state support in June, and Missouri significantly slashed its budget, freezing new enrollments.

In some areas, like Clark County, Nevada, program partners have had to downsize drastically after state grants expired. While community donors and recent memorial contributions in Parton's name have provided some support, these one-time donations are unlikely to replace consistent state funding. The program continues to inspire families, with children aging out often expressing sadness at receiving their last book.

Parton's dedication to the program stems from her father's inability to read or write. She named the library in his honor, cherishing the nickname "The Book Lady." The program's personalized touch, with children's names on book labels, has left a lasting impact on millions, encouraging a lifelong love for reading and directing graduates to local public libraries.
