Marilyn Hampton, who dedicated 39 years to the Aubrey Independent School District, will be honored with a new elementary school named in her memory. The district unanimously voted to name their fifth elementary campus, set to open in August 2027, after Hampton. She retired in 2022.
Hampton began her career in 1983 as a custodian, a role from which she extended significant support to students. She provided school supplies, lunch money, homework assistance, and emotional comfort, often acting as a "school helper."
Her commitment went beyond her job description, including coaching youth soccer and sponsoring cheerleading. She famously repaired a student's pants and consistently offered aid with groceries and school supplies to struggling families.
Hampton's own past struggles with affording school supplies fueled her desire to ensure students had what they needed. She kept a supply of stationery in her office for students' use, often receiving notes of appreciation.
Superintendent Shannon Saylor described Hampton as an "educator regardless of her title" and a "kid champion." Jim Milacek, the school board president, recalled her willingness to help students even outside of school hours. Marilyn Hampton Elementary School will serve as a lasting tribute to her kindness and dedication.
