Schools Go Green: Nature Inspires Learning

Environmental learning is flourishing beyond classrooms in Cuddalore's government schools, with initiatives like solar panels, herbal gardens, and rainwater harvesting systems now integral to the campus experience. Eleven government schools have been transformed into climate-responsive environments through the Cuddalore district's Green School programme.

This initiative, implemented by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, combines green infrastructure with practical, activity-based learning. Students are gaining hands-on exposure to renewable energy, water conservation, waste management, and biodiversity.

The programme's phased rollout has included schools like Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Manjakuppam and others in Tittakudi, Kadampuliyur, Vriddhachalam, Panruti, Reddiyur, Oraiyur, and Chidambaram.

Collector Sibi Adhithya Senthil Kumar highlighted the program's goal: to move environmental education beyond theoretical lessons. Students can now directly observe and participate in sustainable practices, fostering a deeper understanding of clean energy, water resource management, and scientific waste handling.

Furthermore, the developed green spaces are enhancing the school environment and providing students with opportunities to connect with nature. The overarching aim is to encourage students to adopt eco-responsible practices, expecting this awareness to positively influence their homes and local communities.
