CT Students Show Fitness Gains, Mile Test Still a Hurdle
2 Sep
Summary
- Connecticut students show improved physical fitness scores this past school year.
- Many districts are still below state targets for student fitness assessments.
- Aerobic endurance and push-up tests remain challenging for many students.

Newly released data from Connecticut's physical fitness assessments for the 2025-26 school year indicates a positive trend in student physical well-being. Many students are now performing as well as they did before the COVID-19 pandemic across various fitness measures.
The assessment, which includes tests for aerobic endurance, flexibility, and strength, revealed that just over half of students successfully completed all four components. While "curl-ups" have shown improvement, the aerobic mile remains a significant challenge, with only 68% of students meeting the state's target.
Push-up performance also saw fewer than 75% of students meeting the required number of repetitions. Despite these challenges, districts like Cornwall and Barkhamsted achieved top scores. Connecticut aims for 75% of students to pass all four fitness tests simultaneously, a goal currently met by only 10 districts.
