QLD Teachers Compelled to Teach Creationism Over Science

Teachers in Queensland Christian schools were reportedly mandated to attend a creationist conference hosted by a US-based group. The conference presented the view that radiometric dating techniques are flawed and suggested the Himalayas formed due to the 'great flood.' Attendees were encouraged to integrate these creationist viewpoints into their science and humanities lessons.

While faith-based schools are permitted to teach religious doctrine, concerns have been raised about incorporating non-scientific theories into the mandatory curriculum. The Science Teachers' Association of Queensland highlighted the curriculum's explicit inclusion of evolution from year 10. Christian Community Ministries, which operates 15 schools, stated that their institutions fully adhere to the Australian curriculum while also integrating insights from a biblical perspective.

Answers in Genesis, the US group involved, promotes a 'young earth creationist' stance. Despite assurances of curriculum compliance, questions remain regarding the mechanisms for overseeing content in autonomous schools. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority affirmed that syllabuses support scientific theories like evolution, with principals holding ultimate responsibility for teaching quality.
