Supreme Court Grants CPS Students Exam Opportunities

The central government has committed to the Supreme Court to provide 852 students from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) with two chances to pass their final examinations. These students, who were enrolled in six fellowship and three diploma courses discontinued in 2024, can now sit for exams conducted by CPS. This measure aims to allow them to obtain their degrees and register with medical councils.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in consultation with the National Medical Commission (NMC), reached this updated decision. The CPS courses were halted due to non-compliance with certain NMC regulations, leading to the central authorities deeming previous admissions 'completely illegal'. The Supreme Court also reviewed the case of 57 students enrolled in 2017-18 who had completed degrees but not yet registered.
Previously, the Bombay High Court had upheld the discontinuation of CPS courses and prohibited the college from affiliating with hospitals or admitting students without NMC permission. This action followed petitions highlighting inadequate infrastructure and facilities at CPS-affiliated training hospitals. The Supreme Court has ordered CPS to submit a list of all affected students, with further hearings scheduled.
