ComedK Tightens Security After Jamshedpur Exam Scam
1 Oct
Summary
- New encrypted question papers will be used next year.
- Thirty-six students were initially barred from counselling due to suspected malpractice.
- An elected representative in Jamshedpur allegedly involved in exam scam.
The Consortium of Medical, Dental and Engineering Colleges of Karnataka (ComedK) is bolstering security protocols after suspected malpractice occurred at three examination centers in Jamshedpur earlier this year. The organization has engaged three senior cybersecurity experts to develop a new examination system.
This new model will feature seven encrypted question papers, with passwords to be distributed to centers only 20 minutes prior to the examination. Previously, four sets of papers were used, with passwords provided an hour in advance. The need for these enhanced measures arose after ComedK initially barred 36 students from counselling, suspecting malpractice through leaked question papers and external assistance facilitated by invigilators.
An FIR has been filed in Jamshedpur concerning the incident. Several invigilators who reportedly turned approvers and provided statements have since disappeared due to death threats. Allegations suggest an elected representative in Jamshedpur may have been involved. When ComedK sent a team to investigate, the centers were found locked and subsequently sanitized, hindering evidence collection.
ComedK's investigation revealed a significant anomaly: none of the top 10 rank holders were from Karnataka, with five of the top six ranks originating from Jamshedpur. In a separate initiative, ComedK has partnered with Sneha Society to provide free online and offline counseling services to students, addressing issues like academic pressure and depression.
