22 May
Summary
- New national standards cover school buildings, safety, facilities, and staffing.
- Schools must meet updated requirements within three years.
- Mandatory improvements include enhanced security, better learning environments, and increased staffing.

China has established new baseline requirements for primary and secondary schools to standardize facilities across the nation. Issued by the Ministry of Education and other departments, these new standards encompass school buildings, safety, living facilities, teaching equipment, and staffing. All regular primary and secondary schools are expected to comply with these updated regulations within a three-year timeframe.
The updated requirements include stringent safety measures such as closed management, alarm systems, and video surveillance. School buildings must adhere to fire safety standards, and students will have individual desks and chairs. Enhanced learning environments are mandated, featuring adequate sports facilities, psychological counseling rooms, and classrooms equipped with high-speed internet and modern technology like interactive whiteboards and science labs.
For boarding schools, dormitories must not be in basements, and students require individual beds with safety guardrails. Essential amenities like canteens, toilets, and bathing facilities are also specified. Schools must establish infirmaries staffed by medical personnel and hire certified security guards. The number of full-time teachers will be adjusted to cover all required courses, with a dedicated mental health teacher for each school.
