Mumbai has initiated the first phase of Census 2027, deploying over 24,500 enumerators and supervisors. These government employees began collecting their orders, identity cards, and maps at local health posts and ward offices to commence house listing and mapping.
The fieldwork, which started recently, will span three days for area familiarization. Actual data collection and uploading via a mobile application are scheduled to begin on May 19. Each supervisor manages a team of six enumerators, with areas divided into blocks similar to those used for vaccination drives.
Some staff encountered initial difficulties, such as delays in receiving supervisor orders. Field operations in densely populated areas like Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar present unique challenges due to narrow lanes. Each enumerator is tasked with covering approximately 800 to 850 houses within a month.
The BMC's executive health officer confirmed that the house count is the focus of this initial phase. The subsequent population count is planned for February 2027, adhering to national directives. Teachers involved in the census have also been granted temporary relief from their Booth-Level Officer duties.
