CBSE 2026: Faster, Greener Exams with On-Screen Marking
19 Feb
Summary
- Class 12 answer books will be evaluated digitally starting in 2026.
- On-Screen Marking aims for faster, transparent, and error-free evaluations.
- Schools require specific technical setups for this digital evaluation system.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to revolutionize its evaluation process by introducing On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 answer books beginning with the 2026 board examinations. This significant shift aims to accelerate grading, enhance transparency, and reduce errors. Class 10 answer books will continue to be evaluated physically in 2026.
The adoption of OSM by CBSE is driven by several key benefits, including faster evaluations through wider teacher participation, automatic elimination of totalling errors, and reduced manual intervention. The system also negates the need for post-result verification, minimizing delays, and eliminates the logistical challenges and costs associated with transporting physical answer books.
To facilitate this digital transition, schools must meet specific technical requirements. These include having a computer lab with a public static IP, PCs or laptops with Windows OS 8 or above, reliable internet connectivity (minimum 2 Mbps), and an uninterrupted power supply. CBSE is providing comprehensive support through practice runs, training sessions, and a dedicated call center.
