Broward County school district has partnered with safety technology firm BusPatrol to enhance school bus safety. The initiative involves outfitting the district's 1,300 buses with artificial intelligence technology designed to detect drivers who unlawfully pass stopped school buses. This aligns with Florida law, which mandates that motorists stop when a school bus displays its stop signal.
Starting September 9th, drivers caught violating this law will receive a $225 citation. A warning period is currently underway. BusPatrol will manage the initial review of video evidence, with school police issuing citations within Broward County. BusPatrol reports that approximately 99% of drivers captured on camera do not re-offend.
Officials highlighted that violations are linked to the vehicle owner, but an appeals process is available. Owners can submit affidavits if they were not driving at the time of the infraction. Last year, the district recorded 1,244 instances of drivers disregarding stop bars.
